In collaboration with Walker Bushe Architects, Studio Augustin developed a feasibility study and outline designs for new high density, mixed use apartments located on a main road in central Lahore. At the heart of the study was the desire to integrate a range of environmental design strategies that would reduce the over reliance on typical air conditioning systems.
The living spaces congregate around large cores and atria which puncture the plan to deliver evaporatively cooled air and reflected daylight throughout the building.
Early stage designs attempt to accommodate the clients desire for low-energy luxury residential units. This seemingly contradictory brief provided an opportunity to discuss and identify the difficulties of producing ‘modern use’ buildings sustainably. The exercise allowed the design team to look closely at scale and helped to define the limits of a low-energy urban typology within such a context.
